WHY PLASTIC GEARS ARE MORE SUITABLE FOR GEAR PUMPS THAT TRANSPORT LOWVISCOSITY LIQUIDS

Some customers have a stereotype that metal gears fit best with gear pumps, while plastic gear seems to be low-end and fragile。 Here I would like to briefly discuss the material selection of pump gears and shafts for low-viscosity liquid transportation。

During the operation of a gear pump, the revolving parts are driving gear and driven gear. Two gears are responsible not only for transmitting the torque, but also for pressurizing and transporting the liquid. As a result, the gear pair is required not only to have high rigidity but also to have good self-lubricity, dimensional accuracy, as well as corrosion resistance.


It is easy to understand the requirements for rigidity, accuracy, and corrosion resistance, but why is the gear pair supposed to be self-lubricating? The answer is that there exists a relative slide between teeth of the gears that are meshing with each other。 If the gear material is poorly self-lubricating, such as ordinary 316 stainless steel, then the gears are very likely to be locked once the rotational speed slightly increases。 In consequence, when selecting the gear material for your pumps, especially those transporting low viscosity or poorly lubricated liquids (such as water or some solvents), you need to pay special attention to the materials self-lubricity。


In addition, another material property also deserves the attention PV(Pressure Velocity) Value. This value indicates a materials allowable wear, and the wear is measured by the product of the specific load (P) and the sliding speed (V)。 If PV value is too low, then whatever its rigidity, a material is not suitable to be used as frictional pairs。
