WHY GEAR PUMPS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR TRANSPORTING LIQUIDS CONTAINING SOLID PARTICLES

Generally speaking, gears pump are only suitable for transporting pure liquids without solid particles, because solid particles are likely to cause pump failure。

The gear pump is a kind of positive displacement pumps。 It relies on the volume change produced by the meshing of gears to pump in and out liquids。 Gears need space to rotate inside the pump, meaning that there exist clearances between the gears and the corresponding pump body。 These clearances allow a part of liquid to flow back from the high-pressure outlet to the low-pressure inlet, and this process is called the gear pumps internal leakage。 These gaps are designed to be extremely small so as to restrict the amount of internal leakage, and the lower is the liquid viscosity is/the higher the differential pressure between the inlet and the outlet is, the smaller these gaps should be。


Our NP series micro gear pumps can reach a differential pressure of 20Bar (2MPa) when transporting low viscosity liquids (such as water or other solvents), with the minimum gap in the pump being controlled at 0.02mm. Therefore, any solid particle larger than 0.02mm will cause the gear pump to be stuck.

Besides, two gears(driving gear and driven gear)mesh with each other when in operation, that is to say, the teeth of gears contact each other. Also, there are frictional movements between shafts and bearings. Once solid particles enter into the gaps between these parts, they will result in severe wears, which shorten the pumps lifespan。
